ALONE AGAINST THE REST OF THE WORLD
Sylvie OHAYON
« Vous aurez du mal à croire à mon histoire, pourtant c'est arrivé. »
Jewish born Lilli grew up in the deprived suburb of La Courneuve, home to over 4000 people. Having been abandoned at birth by her father Kabyle, she was raised firstly by her grandparents who had emigrated from Northern Africa, then under the authority of an abusive Catholic stepfather. Her story, which reads like a novel, tackles the most topical subjects of modern day debate; including diversity, integration and national identity. Full of striking accuracy on the bonds of friendship and solidarity, this book shows us that the suburb of La Courneuve is just another district like any other, and proves that moving to prettier parts of Paris does not necessarily guarantee a better life.
